Last week was a huge wake-up call for many people in Southern California. Our goal at Be Ready to to make sure you are prepared at all times, so here is our simple guide as to what to do in case of an earthquake:
Before an Earthquake:
- It is good to have a plan on where you could go in each room to drop and cover. Just make sure it’s away from windows.
- Know where your utility shutoffs are and how to turn them off.
- Install latches on cupboards.
- Secure water heater. You really want to do this – so you can have some water to live off of if we do have a disaster.
During an Earthquake:
- Move away from the windows – and big screen tv’s
- Get under a desk or table.
- Do not go to doorways jam.
- Do not run outside. Things from the roof or off the side of the building could fall on you.
- If you are outside when an earthquake starts, do your best to find a clear spot away from the buildings, powerlines, and trees.
After an Earthquake:
- Stay away from damaged buildings as they may collapse,
- Do not move injured people unless absolutely necessary to get them safe.
- In case of a major earthquake, it is possible that police and firefighters will not be able to help anyone for at least 3 days. This is because they must do a review of the roads to know what roads can take the weight of the vehicles before they start rescuing people. Otherwise, they will be stuck and not be able to help the greater number.
- Make sure you have non-perishable food, emergency water (about 1 gallon per day per person), dust makes, goggles, flashlights, and battery-operated radio with extra batteries.
- If anything has collapsed, make sure you wear your mask and goggles and quality shoes for protecting your feet from broken glass.
- Monitor the radio to get overall situation updates instructions in your area
